Many companies have to keep in mind the security risks associated with remote work situation, executing critical business transaction with shared laptops, lack of firewalls, patchy use of VPNs and weak Wi-Fi passwords is scary situation for IT security. No wonder that cyber-attacks are on rise since the new normal of ‘work from home’ started due to pandemic. Most of the incidents of ‘denial of service’ attacks which now have tripled go unreported and a price before realizing their impacts on business is paid. For reducing the dangers posed by cyber-attacks, many businesses are now giving importance of cybersecurity monitoring. It shows that the perception about cybersecurity threat is changing gradually. Robust security has become a necessity Many companies were caught off guard due to sudden occurrence of Covid-19 pandemic. The previous security designs and emergency plans turned out to be ineffective as they were not built with the situation similar to current reality of widespread remote work practice. Regular testing of a plan in various scenarios is necessary (90 days ideally). We need multiple collaboration channels and easing the strain on networks through a back-up platform. Data can be safeguarded well through cloud-based platforms as they are quiet effective at safeguarding data. Within organizations each hierarchy must have a better awareness towards security. Providing awareness and resources about security protocols and security education to remote workers must be a responsibility of organization. When connecting to company system, it must be ensured that a VPN, secure network and firewall are used. Also make sure that the threat perception towards variety of security attacks which the remote workers can come across is built, this way security risks can be reduced and averted by a large margin.
